How to Reach Majuli?

By Road: Since Majuli is a river island, it doesn't have any well-maintained system of roadways. So, you cannot take a bus or taxi to Majuli. but you can reach Jorhat by bus or Taxi. Again, the only option is to rely on a nearby city, specifically Jorhat, to reach this beautiful island.

Famous for Mask Making:

Mask making is one of the famous Crafts practiced in Majuli. Mask making is the traditional craft for the Alengi Narasinha Sattra, Bihimpur Sattra, Chamuguri (Natun and Purani), and Uttar Kamalabari Sattra. Mask making is another well-known craft in the Sattras for the purpose of using it in Bhaona (drama), Raas festivals, and also a source of earning. Traditionally, there are three types of masks which are prepared in the Sattras of Majuli. These are – Mukh Mukha, Cho Mukha, and lotokai Mukha. The present Sattradhikar of Natun Chamuguri Sattra Sri Koshakanta Deva Goswami, Sri Umakanta Dev Goswami, Phanidhar Goswami, Krishnakanta Goswami, Hem Chandra Goswami is some of the reputed people who give the devotion to all in mask making.

Pottery:

Pottery is the most significant traditional form of the Cottage industry in Majuli. Pottery makers popularly called as Kumar, they are inhabited in the Salmara, Chinatoli, and Dakhinpat. The pottery making process is continuous from generation to generation is this island. They use a different technique of Pottery making in which the potter’s wheel is not used. More than 5000 people are dependent on this traditional and unique craft for their livelihood.

Boat Making:

The boat is the prime means of communication on the island of Majuli. Craft related to boat making has been practiced in Majuli since the time of the arrival of diverse communities on the island. The craft of making these vessels are traditionally passed on from generations within the families who have mastered the art. Traditional boats are generally used for fishing, small Cargo handling, passenger carriers in rivers and tourism, etc

Satras:

Majuli Cultural Landscape Regions Act 2006 has recognized 31 existing sattras in Majuli. Some important sattras of Majuli .

The Main Tourists places Satras in Majuli are:

Auniati Satra:

Founded by Niranjan Pathakdeva, the Satra is famous for "Paalnaam" and Apsara dances. Also remarkable is its extensive assortment of ancient artifacts, Assamese old utensils, jewelry, and handicrafts.

Dakhinpat Satra:

Founded by Banamalidev, an exponent of Raasleela, which is now observed as one of the main festivals of Assam. During Rasotsava several thousand devotees visit these holy Satras every year.

Garamur Satra

The Garamur Satra is one of the royal satras of the Majuli Island. It is considered a prominent holy site and was established in the year 1656 AD by Jayaharideva.The satra houses many valuable possessions like utensils made of silver and ivory, wheels for elephant carts, sculptures of Umber and many other ancient literary manuscripts.

Kamalabari Satra:

Founded by Bedulapadma Ata, it is a center of art, culture, literature, and classical studies. The finest boats on the island are made here. It's a branch, Uttar Kamalabari Satra, has showcased the Satria Art in several states of India and abroad.

Bengenaati Satra:

It is a storehouse of antiques of cultural importance and an advanced center of performing art. Muraridev, the grandson of Sankardeva's stepmother founded this Satra. The royal robes belonging to the Ahom king Swargadeo Gadadhar Singha is preserved here. Also on display is the royal gold umbrella.
